Troubleshooting Having To Large Of A Gap Between The Helper Spring And The Top Leaf

Updated 06/09/2025 | Published 05/30/2025

Question:

I have installed the Hellwig 990 helper springs on my 97 F-150. I have the mounting brackets tightened up to the end of the thread and still have one inch of gap between the helper spring and the top leaf. I am concerned that this may not provide sufficient support. The stated minimum gag is listed as 1/4 inch.

Hey Robert,

I reached out to Hellwig to see what they suggest on those # HE48VR springs. They suggested to add a couple washers under the crossbar. That is going to give you more threads to the U-bolts to get more out of the springs. I know the kit came with 8 but if you have some washers laying around or any from your local hardware store just for the use of getting you more thread that will work fine.

Let me know how that works out for you.

I used larger bolts that slid over the u-bolt threads as well as an additional washer. That got the gap down to 1/4 inch. I am disappointed that the spring seems to do little to maintain ride height with my camper. My camper is about 1400 pounds,

@Bob I am glad to hear that you were able to get the gap down to the recommended height. Are they still sagging your vehicle down? Are you towing a camper or do you have an in bed truck bed camper on that truck?
