Features to know about

Stay Level Under Load: 2,000-lb Load Leveling Capacity

When you’ve got a trailer hooked up or the bed full of gear, the rear end shouldn’t sag. These Hellwig EZ-990 helper springs add 2,000 lbs of load-leveling support above your factory leaf springs to keep your truck sitting level and stable. By reducing squat and sway, steering and braking stay steady even when you’re towing or hauling light loads.

Comparison image showing multiple Hellwig helper spring models, including the EZ-990 Above Axle version, used to demonstrate design and configuration differences between Hellwig leaf spring products for load leveling and suspension enhancement.

Smooth Out the Bounce: Flexes with Your Leaf Springs

Heavy loads can make a truck feel rough over bumps, but these helper springs move with your factory leaf springs to keep the ride controlled. They flex as the suspension moves, cutting down bounce and helping your tires stay planted for better stability. It’s a simple way to make towing and hauling feel more confident without a harsh ride.

Balance Uneven Loads: Adjustable U-Bolts and Independent Sides

Sometimes the weight isn’t perfectly even—maybe tools on one side or a water tank on the other. The EZ-990 lets you fine-tune tension on each side using adjustable U-bolts so you can level things out. Driver’s and passenger’s sides can be set independently, keeping your truck balanced no matter how the load sits.

Bolt On and Go: Easy Above-Axle Installation

You don’t need special tools or major modifications to get these helper springs installed. They bolt right above your factory leaf springs using the included mounting hardware. Once in place, they strengthen your suspension setup without changing how it’s built, extending the life of your factory springs, tires, and brakes while delivering solid support every time you load up.

Built to Last: Durable Steel with Protective Coating

A real suspension upgrade should be ready for years of work. The Hellwig EZ-990 springs are made from durable steel and finished with a silver vein hammer tone powder coat that resists corrosion. That means they hold strong through weather, miles, and heavy use—performance that stays dependable long after the first haul.

Video Transcript for Ultimate Overview of the Hellwig EZ-990 Helper Springs

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at the Hellwig's EZ-990 above axle helper springs for small trucks and SUVs. Now this is a custom fit part. This will fit many models of the Dodge, Ford, GM, and Toyota trucks, and SUVs. And because it fits so many different models, I do recommend for you to go to our website, use the fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle, and it'll show you if this will work for your application. Now these are custom helper springs.

These will upgrade your factory leaf springs to reduce sway and body roll. They'll help prevent sagging when you're towing or hauling light loads, and they'll extend the life of your factory suspension, tires, and brakes. These will flex with the leaf springs to limit bouncing while providing optimal stability. And what's nice, I want to zoom in and show you these U bolts here that you install them with. They can be adjusted to suit different loads.

The drivers and the passenger sides can be adjusted independently for uneven loads. And it's a very easy install. You bolt these above your factory leaf springs. As we mentioned, the mounting hardware you can see here is included, does come with a nice set of instructions. These are durable steel construction.

They ensure long lasting performance and they do have a nice finish to them, sort of a unique finish. Zoom in on that. If you look on the end here, this whole spring has what they call a silver vein hammer tone powder coat finish. That'll help resist corrosion, gives it a nice look to it. And these parts are made in the USA.

A few specs on this. The weight capacity is 2000 pounds. One thing I do wanna mention is these Hellwig helper springs will not increase your vehicle's weight carrying capacity. But that should do it for the review on the Hellwig EZ-990 above axle helper springs for small trucks and SUVs.

Completely helped the squating rear on 350xl transit box truck with dual rear wheels. Improved ride and handling when loaded. Rides smooth and looks like it is supposed to.

by:

Ez-990 helper springs sagged with 800lb camper and bottomed while driving over speed bumps unless creeping. Unloaded there was noticeable tightness, almost binding feeling on bumps. I removed and checking options like airbags or Sumo.

by:

These work great. Very easy install. I have a bed slide and a camper top, and these brought the rear back up to the proper height.

by:

Product seems good, instructions are terrible . Can't find a video with my product for install anywhere .

by:

Easy to install, very effective and didn’t have much effect on ride quality. Mine worked on the lowest setting with a 16’ camper.

by:

These springs eliminated the rear sag from adding a shell, rubber bed mat, and a little gear.
Easy to install as well, but recomend having a 7/16X20 tap/die to clean threads on supplied u-bolts.

by:

Easy to install. It should help stabilize the rear springs when I tow our boat.

by:

The product fit well and installed would have been a breeze if it wasn’t for the hardware. The u bolts are very poor quality with burrs and poorly tolerances threads. In addition only half the hardware was the correct size. One set of nuts was too big for the u bolts. The hardware was also low quality. In my opinion it should have all been grade 8 corrosion resistant hardware and it is much lower grade. I ended up having to buy all new hardware to be able to install at an additional cost. Now that it is installed the product works fantastic. Just be aware you may need to purchase extra hardware to get it installed.

by:

The springs lifted my Tacoma with a cap about an inch higher. It would have been more helpful if the directions indicated that a C-Clamp would be useful to compress the spring ends to allow the u-bolts to be installed. The directions also indicated the long end of the spring should face forward. I measured the spring from the end to the hole and this was the same either way, so was confusing. I purchased longer axle u-bolts since the added thickness of this extra spring made the factory u-bolts too short IMO. I feel that should have been part of this kit. Lastly, the u-bolt on the driver's side did not need to be installed sideways per the instruction. It fit fine just as the other u-boults were installed. Maybe the instructions could be updated to be more accurate.

by:

U bolts are to long and would not allow the prop tightening.
Hellwig customer service advices to shim with washers.
Poor recommend repair.

by:

Easy install great fit. Readjusted for our new trailer in 10 minutes and working wonderfully.Leveled the truck and rides smooth..

by:

I was a great addition to my RST 1500 Chevy and I transferred to my High Country 1500 Chevy and never missed a beat towing the travel trailer.

by:

Easy to install, does not affect the ride much , worked great pulling my fish house to the lake. I showed my helper springs to one of my customers, gave him the part number for his truck and he ordered them from e-trailer today. Great product.

by:

It worked perfectly for my needs. It helped my 2011 Silverado from sagging too much without raising the backend of the truck much (1/4 to 1/2) while empty. I can adjust this added spring to have less sag but then I raise the backend a little more. It's at a happy medium. It is easy to fine tune it if I want more or less spring support.

by:

Loaded my tacoma with a portaboat on the ladder rack and a few hundred pounds of camping gear. The sag was gone after installing these. The ride is a little bit stiffer when empty as to be expected but not bad even on washboard dirt roads. These can be fairly easily installed and removed if desired. Hardest part is jacking up the truck to sit on the frame

by:

Way better than expected. Huge difference in the rear suspension. It’s almost like having a sway bar.

Came quickly, well packed and complete. I've seen complaints about the hardware, but it seemed fine. The bracket bolts are oddly sized at 13/16.
One concern on my 97 F-150 is that theHellwig brackets seem too long to tighten up sufficiently. I have run out of thread with the spring gap at about one inch.
Had I realized that I'd have to remove the leaf spring brackets to install this I probably would have paid to get the ones that mount over the spring bracket. Getting 28 year old bolt loose is a bear.

by:

Made of good material. Would try on different trucks I have

by:

Worked Great! Exactly what our customer needed.

by:

Great product. Quick shipping. Would buy here again.

Helper springs made my Ram 1500 Conversion Van have a more comfortable ride. The springs raised the profile of the back of the van by about 1-1/2", which is not noticeable and the van still looks good. My RV Travel trailer lowered the back half of the van by about 1", before I installed the helper springs. The helper springs should enhance the ride of the van.

  • Troubleshooting Having To Large Of A Gap Between The Helper Spring And The Top Leaf
Hey Robert, I reached out to Hellwig to see what they suggest on those # HE48VR springs. They suggested to add a couple washers under the crossbar. That is going to give you more threads to the U-bolts to get more out of the springs. I know the kit came with 8 but if you have some washers laying around or any from your local hardware store just for the use of getting you more thread that will work fine. Let me know how that works out for you.

  • What Is the Difference Between Hellwig Helper Springs # HE62FR and # HE48VR?
Hey Jim, The Hellwig EZ-990 Helper Springs part # HE62FR is not a fit for a 1994 Ford F-150 based on Hellwig's fitment guide on their website. They fit older GM and Chevy trucks but not your vehicle. The Hellwig EZ-990 Helper Springs part # HE48VR is a kit that is intended to work with a large variety of factory leaf spring configurations and works with different brands of trucks like Dodge, Ford, GM, and Toyota. There is also the Hellwig EZ-990 Helper Springs part # HE85VR that works...

  • Which Hellwig Load Pro Kit Fits 1998 Chevy K1500
Hey Pete, so Hellwig has a kit that fits the 1998 K1500 with the part # HE55XR but the kit you mentioned does not fit as it was designed for older trucks.

  • Best Helper Springs for a 2015 Thor Four Winds with Rear Sag
Billy, if you're carrying a constant load and the rear of the vehicle is sagging, helper springs are worth considering. On a heavily loaded Ford E-350 or E-450 chassis which is the most common chassis for the Thor Four Winds, it's common for the factory leaf springs to flatten out over time, and if they've developed a noticeable upward or inverted bow, that can be a sign that they're carrying more weight than they were originally designed to support. That is something to keep an eye...
