Why Are There Only Class III Trailer Hitches Available For 2025 Kia Carnival Hybrid EX

Updated 09/26/2025 | Published 05/04/2025

Question:

Hey guys, I have a 2025 Kia Carnival Hybrid EX. Towing capacity is just 1000lbs tongue weight 350, but every site - including yours - says a Class 3 hitch is the only one that will work, even though Class 2 hitches are closer to my weight load maxes. Why is this? Thanks, Chris in GR

Hey Christian, good question. And you're right, for your 2025 Carnival Hybrid EX, all the available custom-fit hitches are Class III rated with capacities that exceed what your minivan can handle. The simple answer here is that while your Hybrid EX maxes out at 1,000 pound towing, other versions/models of the Carnival can handle up to 3,500 pounds.

Since the etrailer Class III # e36KR you were looking at fits all models of the '25 Carnival, it's tested to exceed that full range of possible capacities.

With that in mind, I do also want to point out that there is another benefit of a Class III hitch over a Class II that has nothing to do with weight capacity, and that comes in with the larger 2" receiver it provides. I'm not sure what you plan on using the hitch for, but a 2" receiver has SIGNIFICANTLY more accessory options (bike racks, cargo carriers, etc) to choose from than ones designed for the smaller 1-1/4" receiver that a Class I and Class II hitch utilizes.

Because of this, even when the capacity of a Class III hitch far exceeds what the vehicle can even handle, I always recommend going with it even in cases where a smaller Class II model might be available. As long as you stay within the vehicle's smaller limits, there's no downside of going with a over-rated hitch.

Do you mind sharing what you'll be using the hitch for?

Hey Chris, did you decide what you'll be using the hitch for? I'm asking because knowing your plans could help others make informed decisions about their hitch options.
