Solution to Allow Weigh Safe True Tow WDH to Clear Tailgate

Updated 09/27/2025 | Published 04/21/2025

Question:

Want to purchase weighsafe true tow equalizer hitch. Middle weight would be correct size for my trailer. But YouTube video says tail gate will hit tounge jack. Would heavy weight work for 10,000 pound trailer and does the head protrude the ball further back so tail gate wouldnt hit jack. I heard old version of heavyweight was longer.

Hey Forest! You aren't going to get the clearance you need from moving to the Heavyweight. Even if you did, that system is going to be overrated so you wouldn't want to use it with your trailer. You're better off sticking with the Middleweight # WS94RR (2" shank) or # WS59MR (2-1/2" shank).

All of their shanks are the same length and you can't use shanks from other systems so that is out of the question. An extender isn't going to work well either and it will cut your tongue weight capacity by 50% if it did. If you really want to stick with Weigh Safe you could use the Gen-Y stacked receiver like # 325-GH-503. This can be used with a WDH and does not reduce tongue weight capacity.

Outside of that I recommend switching to something like an Equal-i-zer # EQ37120ET or # EQ37140ET and using an extended shank like # EQ90-02-4500. This is another great system it just lacks the tongue weight scale feature.

Hey Forest, did you decide to stick with the Middleweight hitch for your trailer, or did you explore the option of using the Gen-Y stacked receiver? I'm curious about what worked for you, as it could help others facing similar clearance issues with their setups.

@RobinH. Hi Robin. I was so worried about my tailgate on my 2024 ford f350 hitting my electric jack that I decided to believe the guy from wandering weekends on YouTube who has the same truck as me and when he tested both middle and heavy weight hitches he found the middle weight caused tailgate to not be able to open without hitting. But now that I look back he did use different trailers on those tests. And now since it seems to me both hitches use same drop down and ball and gauge unit that with my 2024 alliance 292 RL the middle weight would have probably worked fine. But the only way to have known for sure would have been to purchase one and test it but if it didn't work I would have to try and send back a assembled opened possibly scratched unit which would have been a pain. After calling weighsafe they said that the heavy weight would work fine even though it's overrated and costs a little more. So I ended up ordering the heavy weight and it's it's been working great for around 3000 miles so far. I wish I could have had a way to get length of hitch specs and trailer specs from ball to electric jack. But even then it depends on the type of jack they installed and how much the nose of jack protrudes. Thank you for checking back. As far as helping others make a decision it seems like there's just to many variables for me to give sound advice. Thanks, Forest. M
