Will Curt 2025 BMW X3 30 Hitch Prevent Foot Sensor From Activating Tailgate?

Updated 04/15/2025 | Published 04/10/2025

Question:

I am interested in the Curt hitch for the 2025 BMW X3 30 and saw your installation video on that exact car. Once installed, can the lift gate be operated by using your foot hands free? BMW says that their hitch disables that feature.

Hey Harry, thanks for reaching out!

We haven't heard any reports on whether or not the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C99RV will get in the way of the sensors, but since the crossmember for the hitch sits up higher, it shouldn't sit between the sensors and where your foot will swipe under the bumper.

The receiver itself might make it slightly harder to pick up your foot, but if you kick your foot in a forward-to-backwards motion (like you're kicking a ball) the sensor should be able to pick up your foot no problem.

Hopefully this helps explain that a little more - let me know if you have any other questions!

What do you plan on using the hitch receiver for?

I would use for bicycles and cargo carrier. No plans to pull a trailer. I haven't bought the vehicle yet. I'm surprised you don't know for sure since you have a video showing the installation. Evidently you installed this without checking. Maybe you could ask whoever owns the vehicle you installed it on to let you know.

@Harry I definitely understand where you're coming from. I reached out to the install team and they said they didn't check, but they also looked at where the sensors were located and the liftgate sensor won't be affected other than kicking to the left or right of the receiver like I referenced above.
