Replacement Bearings and Seals for Dexter Axle on 90's Trailer
Updated 10/22/2025 | Published 03/31/2025 >
Question:
I have a 20 utility trailer from the mid 90s, double axle, 2-5/16 ball. All of the placards on the trailer have been blasted away by years of gravel. Seems to have Dexter axles based on a metal tag frangment I found. Hard to read it fully but the numers could be 5c-0313 I want to know the weight rating so I can get the right bearings and seals. I understand that 5k and 6.2k axles have the same bearings and seals. But what about 7k? Would such a short trailer even have 7k axles? It is original from all I know. New 235/85R16 tires on it.

Hey Grae; that doesn't seem to be a complete serial number so I won't be able to identify it with that information. I would pull the existing hubs and see if the bearing numbers are stamped into the sides of the bearings to try and identify it. 5,200-7k axles are all capable of using the same bearings since the ID of the bearings found on them are all the same so the hub itself would be a bigger concern. The grease seal will either have an ID of 2.125" or 2.25". If part numbers aren't visible you will need to measure the bearings and grease seal or the spindle where they ride.
Realistically I would just go ahead and replace the hubs so you don't have to worry as much about it. If they're original it is time for it anyway considering the age of the trailer. For example, you could use the Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 5.2K - 7K Axles # AKHD-865-7-2-EZ-K on there assuming the bearings have a 1.75" ID for the inner bearing and 1.25" ID for the outer bearing. This hub also has a 2.25" ID grease seal. If you need a different bolt pattern, find that you have different bearings, or need an idler hub instead I'd be happy to help you find a replacement if you can let me know what you find in the comments below.

Hey Grae, what did you find when you checked the bearing numbers or measured the spindle on your trailer axles? Knowing that could confirm if the Easy Grease hub and drum assembly was the right match. Your update could make it easier for others working with older trailers too.
