What Capacity Wheel And Tire Should Be Used With On 8,000 lb Axle?

Updated 10/28/2025 | Published 03/04/2025

Question:

Interesting and conflicting information I’m getting regarding rim weight capacity. Some are saying on an 8,000 lbs axle each rim needs to have 8,000 capacity for total of 16,000. My assumption would have been that each rim would only need to be half of axle capacity. Do I really need two 8,000 rims on a 8,000 axle?

Hey Miles, your assumption is correct. Each rim would need to be rated for half of the axle capacity. The wheel capacity combines, just like the tire capacity. So you would want a wheel rated for at least 4,000 lbs to go with your 8,000 lb axle.

The Aluminum Trinity Series Trailer Wheel # TA24XR you were looking at is rated for upto 4,850 lbs so this would work well for you as long as the 17-1/2" diameter and 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern are correct for your trailer.

Hey Miles, how did things go with the Aluminum Trinity Series trailer wheels for your 8,000 lb axle? Did the 4,850 lb rating and bolt pattern work out as expected? Your update could make it easier for others sorting through similar rim capacity questions.

@JesseM Worked fine except the bolt holes were slightly small.

@Miles Glad to hear it worked out. The wheel is for 9/16" studs. Your hubs also use 9/16" correct?
