Which Gen-Y Fifth Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter for Trailer Weight 15,500 lb

Updated 10/28/2025 | Published 03/02/2025

Question:

I want to change my King Pin to a Gen Y Gooseneck. My trailer has a gross vehicle weight of 15500 lbs. It looks like I should buy the 4.5K one? Does it hurt to go one size up to the 5.5K ? Or does that mess up the way the hitch works?

Hey James, so the best way to pick out a Gen-Y fifth wheel to gooseneck adapter is to find the adapter that has the pin weight capacity range that best matches the pin weight of the trailer. Or to put it better you would ideally want your pin weight to fall right into the middle of the range so that you get the best ride quality.

So for a trailer that weighs 15,500 lbs you'd most likely have a pin weight range of 3,100 lbs so instead of the part # GY66FR you would want the part # GY38FR which has a pin weight range of 2,500 lbs - 4,500 lbs.

Hey James, how did things go with switching to the Gen-Y gooseneck adapter for your trailer? Did the 4.5K model give you the ride quality you were hoping for? Your results could help others trying to match their trailer weight to the right adapter.

@JamesW Understandable! What is your pin weight? I can see if I can do a better job narrowing down your best options.
