Troubleshooting Straps On Thule Bike Carrier That Are Difficult To Release

Updated 10/27/2025 | Published 02/28/2025

Question:

I have a Thule bike carrier and too often I cant get the rubber strap to release from the ratchet when unloading the bike, no matter how hard I press the release leaver. Any hints please. Thanks

Hey Sue, thanks for reaching out. I know what you mean about the straps getting stuck. This problem is not unheard of for these kinds of bike racks, especially when the straps and mechanisms have been exposed to the elements for a long time.

One thing you can try is cleaning the straps and the mechanism as best you can. Dirt and debris can get stuck in there and make things not move correctly. Then just try to keep in as clean and dry as you can going forward. A very tiny amount of WD-40 may help inside the release but use vary sparingly and try not to get any on the actual straps

Another thing I have found helps is try pulling down or even up on the strap while you press the release lever. Sometime if you can wiggle it a bit that will be enough to help the lever release correctly. Then just try pressing that release as firmly as you can while you wiggle it.

If you try all that and it doesn't help, or if the problem gets worse, the next step would be to look at replacing the straps and release. Can you tell me specifically which Thule rack you have? Let me know and I can see if we have a solution for you.

Hey Sue, did cleaning and wiggling the strap while pressing the release lever make it easier to free your bike? If not, knowing which Thule rack you have could help narrow down the next step. Your update could make it easier for others dealing with sticky straps too.
