Brakes for Second Axle on Horse Trailer

Updated 03/12/2025 | Published 02/24/2025

Question:

Hello I am having issues with my electric brakes on a horse trailer. I used a jumper pack to apply 12V to the trailer connector. Might have ped to 11 with the brakes now operating. What voltage should I see at the brakes? I am only seeing 8-9. What voltage does it take at the brakes for full power? Thanks

Thanks for sending the pictures. What you have there are D35 (3,500 lb) axles. The brakes you have on there now would be 10" instead of 7". To add brakes to the other axle you can use the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 3,500-lb Axles - 10" Diameter - 6 on 5-1/2 - Pre-Greased # AKHD-655-35-K along with the etrailer Electric Trailer Brakes - Self-Adjusting - 10" - Left/Right Hand Assemblies - 3.5K # AKEBRK-35-SA and hardware # BRKH10B. The same # 10-1-1 from before can be used to run wire to the brakes.

@RobertM adding brakes to that 2nd axle should make quite the difference. Let me know if you need anything else.

@RobinH Sorry last question Do I also need the nut and bolt kit or do they come with the backing plate kit? I just want to be sure I have all my parts when I get ready to do this

@RobertM the brakes come with the bolts so you just need the # BRKH10B.
