Does Weight Distribution Need to Disconnect When Backing Up

Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 02/21/2025

Question:

Jameson, If I read this correctly, what you are saying is that you need to remove the whole C17062 WD Hitch if it requires making some sort of a turn when backing up? like into a drive way or campsite? You need to back straight in? or are you just talking about the anti sway friction bar that needs to be removed?

Hey Chuck, great question but you would only need to disconnect the spring bars of the Curt WD system part # C17062 from the hangers on the trailer frame and if it's really tight the friction sway control system. With that said, like with any WD system if you are backing up mostly straight you can leave the system installed but if it's a tighter turn than what you would find yourself going forward the spring bars have to come off.

Hey Chuck, how did things go when backing up with the Curt weight distribution hitch? Did removing just the spring bars make it easier to handle those tighter turns? Your update could make it easier for others working with the same setup.
