Weight Distribution Hitch for 2023 Honda Passport Towing Travel Trailer

Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 02/15/2025

Question:

I need a weight distribution hitch preferably with anti-sway to be used in combination with my 2023 AWD Honda Passport and my travel trailer. The Passport hitch can support a tongue weight up to 500 and it can pull up to 5,000. The dry weight of the trailer hitch is 412. The Passport hitch height is 18 while the trailer hitch height is 28. I would appreciate recommendations for products that will be suitable. The trailer frame size is 5 in height. Thank You

Hey TIm! The first thing I want to address is the tongue weight of your trailer. You said your Honda Passport can handle 500 lbs of tongue weight. If your dry tongue weight is 412 lbs you're basically guaranteed to go over 500 lbs.

The 412 isn't factoring in propane or batteries. Add two 20 lb propane tanks at 37 lbs each and you're sitting at 486 lbs. Add two batteries, we will call them 30 lbs each, and you're at 546 lbs which is over the capacity of your vehicle without loading the trailer. Does your manual say you can tow more when using a weight distribution hitch?

Assuming the trailer can be towed with your 2023 Passport you want to choose a system based on the tongue weight of your loaded setup. I do recommend finding that measurement with a tongue weight scale like the # BTBRV44FR. You also need to include the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle in your vehicle.

For a high quality hitch that has great sway control I recommend the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System. You will either need the # EQ37060ET (tongue weight range 200 lbs - 600 lbs) or # EQ37100ET (tongue weight range 600 lbs - 1,000 lbs). You're already going to be pushing 600 lbs without loading anything else on the trailer so the # EQ37100ET is probably the best option. The 1-7/8" 12pt Thin Walled Socket # ALL643216 is also required for installation. It sounds like you need a 10" rise to sit level so you will also need to replace the shank with the # EQ90-02-4300.

Hey Tim, how did things go with the Equal-i-zer weight distribution hitch for your Passport and trailer setup? Did the sway control and shank height work out the way you needed? Your update could make it easier for others working with similar towing limits.
