Hey Larry, the best cost effective brake controller is the Tekonsha Brake EVN part # TK63VR as it's a reliable, proportional brake controller that performs way better than any controller in it's price range.
What year Ford Ranger do you have and does it have trailer wiring currently? If so, what type? Should be either a 4-way or a 7-way.

I have a 4 way factory trailer set up. I’ll probably need the installation kit as well, correct? I’m just waiting to decide to get another tow vehicle which might come it’s wiring so all I’ll need is the controller and not the installation kit. Definitely going to order the controller, but not sure if I need the installation kit. Thanks, Larry
