Upgrading 2017 Kaufman 25K Gooseneck Trailer from Electric Drum Brakes to EOH Disc Brakes

Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 01/13/2025

Question:

I have a 2017 Kaufman trailer. It is a 25k pound gooseneck with 2 10k axles and dual 16 inch tires. It has electric drum brakes. What do I need to convert to electric over hydraulic disc brakes?

Hey Jeremy!

To control your brakes, I recommend the Hydrastar Marine Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Disc Brakes # HS381-8067 and the Brake Line Kit # HS496-252. You'll connect your 7-Way wiring and breakaway kit to the actuator and the brake line kit will replace the brake wiring on your trailer.

We also need to swap out your drum brakes to the disc brakes. From what I can find, I believe you need the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 10,000-lb Axles - 8 on 6-1/2 - Oil Bath # 8-214-5UC1 as well as the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R1058D11HD.

The idler hub uses the inner bearing 395S, outer bearing 387A, and then an oil seal with an inner diameter of 3.125" so you'll want to make sure this will fit on your spindle.

If these specs don't match what you currently have, please let me know and I'll be happy to help you figure out what all you're needing.

Hey Jeremy, how did the conversion to electric over hydraulic disc brakes go on your Kaufman trailer? Once you checked those bearing and seal specs, were the Hydrastar actuator and Kodiak disc kit a good match? Your update could make it easier for others working on a similar setup.
