Updated 11/26/2024 | Published 11/24/2024

Question:

Second time I’ve had to replace axles and need advice please. I would like to upgrade my trailer axles to at least 5000 axles. Don’t really know where to start but this is the trailer. 2017 Jayco Whitehawk 27DSRL Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Ken.

Thanks for emailing the pictures. I am sorry that your axles are causing you issues, replacing them that often should not be happening. I have a different option for you, after hearing about your Alaska trip in the email it sounds like you go on some pretty rugged roads which is well worth it for those amazing views, but as you can see it can be pretty rough on your axles. The Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension - Heavy Duty - No Drop - 5 Bolt Flange - 3,500 lbs # TASR35HDS04 will save you money in the long run if you are going on trips with a rough terrain often. You had mentioned upgrading to 5k, that is why I am suggesting the 3,500lbs, if that is not what you currently have, please let me know. The # TASR35HDS04 are rated for 3,500 lbs, however these are the heavy duty option so the spindles actually use bearings that are rated 5,200-7k. Now because it is axless you might want to consider getting some support beams fabricated.

If you are not going on these rugged roads often then going to a higher rated axle can help solve the issue as well. You mentioned that your hub face measurement is 89", if your spring center is 74" center to center then you want the Trailer Axle Beam with Easy Grease Spindles - 89" Long - 5,200 lbs # e55GR, with hubs and brakes get # e75SR.

One last thing, if your current axle is 3,500 lbs both of the above options are going to give you different bearing numbers. So most likely you will need new hubs, and brakes (if you have a 4 bolt flange now, the above options have a 5 bolt flange). Also, I know that the common bolt pattern on the 3,500 is 5 on 4 1/2, with going to the 5,200 you should switch to a 6 on 5 1/2" as it will be much easier to find hubs but then you have to buy new wheels and tires too. A lot of work, but well worth it to go on some pretty awesome adventures making everlasting memories. As the saying goes, "Work hard, play hard."

Thanks Kate for your reply. I noticed the dimensions drawing in the axle page and noticed the 89” is to the outside of brake hubs. This is next to impossible to measure while wheels are mounted on. My first observed measurement was 79” to inside the brake hubs. After looking at your website I noticed that most axles were 89” so I automatically assumed I made a mistake on my measurements. So my official measurements is 79” to inside flanges. I still think I would like to upgrade to 5400# axles since my fresh water tank is directly over back axle also most problematic axle is.

@KenC Unfortunately, you will need to measure it, it has to be precise. I have attached a help article to show you how to measure. I really wish there was an easier way.
