Double-Eye Leaf Spring Basics

Leaf springs, as you probably know, make up an important part of your trailer's suspension. Their main purpose is to absorb road shock as you travel, as well as allow your axle(s) to move independently of the rest of the trailer.

Double-Eye Spring Parts

To mount this leaf spring, you'll need hangers welded onto your trailer frame - which you probably already have in place - as well as shackle straps and a suspension bolt. It's a good idea to replace your existing straps and bolt while you're under there working on things because they tend to wear out quickly. One thing that could help keep them from wearing out too fast would be upgrading to galvanized or zinc-plated hardware. Doing so will boost the corrosion resistance and, therefore, the longevity of your trailer.

We also always recommend replacing both of your springs at the same time because it's not unusual for leaf springs to sag and elongate over time. If you replace just the one, there's a good chance that it won't match your existing spring on the opposite side of your trailer, and that can mess up your alignment.

Video Transcript for Review of EMCO Trailer Leaf Springs - 4 Leaf Double Eye Spring 6000 lbs Trailer Axle - EM58AJ

Hi, everybody. Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a real quick look at this 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for your 6,000-pound trailer axle. Now, this double-eye leaf spring acts as part of your trailer suspension system by providing an attachment point for a 6,000-pound trailer axle. It is made from a sturdy steel construction, and this is designed to flex to absorb road shock and give you a smooth ride. That's gonna help reduce wear and tear on your trailer, and it's going to ensure a level ride on bumpy and uneven surfaces.

Now, double-eye leaf springs attach to hangers that are welded onto your trailer. One end of the spring will attach directly to the hanger with a suspension bolt. The other end will attach to shackle straps that are suspended from a hanger, and these straps allow the spring to move and pivot so that it can better compensate for uneven pavement. Now, if you have a tandem or a triple-axle trailer, the shackle straps will be attached to the equalizer that connects multiple springs. So if you need hangers, suspension bolts, or equalizers, you can find all that here at etrailer.com.

In the eyes on each end are pre-installed nylon bushings. The eye diameter with the bushings is 9/16 inch. Without the bushing, it's 11/16 inch. And again, this is going to be a 4-leaf spring with the leaf thickness of 1/4 inch. And by itself, it has a spring capacity of 3,000 pounds, and, again, when paired with another one on the other side, that's where you're gonna get your 6,000-pound trailer axle capacity.

Now, let me see if I can line this up here for you on camera. Measuring center of eye to center of eye, you can see we're sitting right at 25-1/8 inches on center. The width of this spring is 1-3/4 inches. Now, additional dimensions with a diagram are available on this product page if you're looking for some more measurements. And of course, to ensure proper axle alignment, I'm sure you know leaf springs should always be replaced in pairs, so that's gonna help with proper axle alignment and suspension performance as well.

If you do decide to pick this up, we would love to hear back from you regarding the installation and the operation of the spring. You can share your experience with us by leaving a comment or a review on this product page. If you leave a review, you can also leave us some photos as well showing this spring on your towing set up. Well, that's gonna wrap up our look today. I do hope that it was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me.

  • Can A 6K Leaf Spring Be Used On A 5.2K Axle?
Hi Loren! There is no reason the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 6,000-lb Trailer Axles - 25-1/8" Long # EM58AJ wouldn't fit a 5,200 pound axle. It would technically be a little overrated for it, but that's a pretty common thing people do. Just make sure this matches your current spring as closely as possible. Also make sure your U-Bolts are long enough. They probably are, but just make sure. This spring has four leaves that measure 1/4" each. If your U-Bolts are not long enough, or are...

  • Replacement Suspension Components for a 2010 Keystone Raptor
Hey Zach. What suspension components are you needing? There's no database that will allow me to look up part numbers for what's on your 2010 Keystone Raptor so you'll need to find some part numbers off of yours or take some measurements. If you need new leaf springs you'll want to jack up one side of your trailer, to get the weight off of the springs, and then measure the springs from the center of each bolt hole. I would also need to know the number of leafs your springs had. You should...

  • How to Identify Replacement Leaf Springs
Hey Don! Do you know your axle capacity? This information is something you will need, along with that leaf spring length. I'm assuming these are worn out so you either need to account for that in your measurement or measure the flat length as outlined in the article I linked further down on this page. Leaf count isn't overly important as long as the rating and length are correct. If you have a 6,000 lb axle and those leaf springs are pretty flat the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 6,000-lb...

  • Looking For New Leaf Springs For Shorelander Boat Trailer
Hello Jack, thanks for reaching out. So I am not seeing we have a spring in that exact length. The closest we have would be a 20-7/16" Long 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # DX93CR which is for a 1,400 lb light duty axle. What is the weight capacity of your axle?

  • What Info Is Needed to Pick Out Leaf Springs
Hey Norman, all I really need to know to pick out leaf springs is the axle capacity and the length of what you have. It doesn't really matter if the setup is overslung or underslung. For example the part # EM58AJ is for a 6k axle and is 25-1/8 inches long.
