2023 Toyota Tacoma Is Not Detecting Trailer - What Can I Do?

Updated 12/12/2024 | Published 11/22/2024

Question:

We have a 23 Toyota that is showing trailer disconnect. However the trailer has checked ok and operates on another truck. The truck plug checks ok. However we have heard of issues of this and it is a sensitivity issue within the truck. how can we change it?

Hello and thanks for reaching out. I have heard of this issue before and this is almost always due to the LED lights on the trailer. The LED lights do not pull enough power for the truck to recognize it is plugged in. The best solution for this is to use a Lamp Out adapter # C35FR if your trailer has a 4 or 5 way connector or # 20142 if your trailer has a 7-way connector. The adapters have built-in resistors that allow the truck to detect the LED lights. This issue is pretty common on new trucks due to the computers used to detect a trailer looking for a specific amount of resistance that the LED lights do not have.

Good Morning Jesse, I did get the year correct, it was mfg 11-17. Will this adaptor still be ok. Is there another one offered for an older truck. Thank you, Brian

@Brian Yes the adapters I mentioned can work on a 2017 model truck to help resolve LED lighting issues like I described above.
