Is The Speed Rating For A Trailer Tire The Maximum Speed It Can Go

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/21/2024

Question:

I am looking to buy tires and wheels for my snowmobile trailer. I noticed there is a mph number for the different tires. If it says 81 mph, does that mean the tires shouldn’t go above that number?

Hey Matt,

Yes, what you're seeing is the maximum speed rating from the manufacturer. This means that they tested the tire to this speed and it still met all of their requirements. The biggest enemy of tires is heat so at a certain point the speed can cause too much heat build up and deteriorate the tire until it blows out.

When replacing the tire and wheels you'll want to match the tire size (label on the sidewall of the tire), the load range (Letter grade listed on sidewall of tire), and the bolt pattern of the wheel to what you currently have. For example, the Kenda Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Tire w/ 15" Series T02 Aluminum Wheel # AM39053 you were looking at has a 205/75R15 tire size, is load range D, has a 5 on 4-1/2 wheel bolt pattern, and the tire is rated for speeds up to 81mph.

If you can tell me more about your current wheels I'd be happy to help find the correct fit for your trailer.

Hey Matt, did you end up going with the Kenda Karrier tire and wheel for your snowmobile trailer? It’d be great to hear how the fit and performance have been so far. Your update could make it easier for others choosing tires with similar speed ratings.
