Troubleshooting Issues With Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty on 2023 Nissan Frontier

Updated 11/02/2024 | Published 10/26/2024

Question:

Installed my TowPro Liberty with custom wiring connection for 2023 Nissan Frontier. Using a 7-pin tester in my socket, it shows brake as a constant tiny flicker with the truck off, so there is clearly some degree of electrical contact taking place all the way back to the socket. The flicker of brake turns off when I start the truck, though 12v on tester illuminates. When I press the brake pedal, truck brake lights activate, but brake on the tester does not illuminate. When I press the override button on my controller, the button lights up, but the brake on the tester still does not. Suggestions, please. Thank you.

Hi James; not getting power when the brake pedal is pressed is normal since you aren't moving. Since it is a proportional controller it won't send power unless it senses deceleration. However, you should have power on the brake output pin when you use the manual override. One thing I would do is unplug the factory wiring harness and then plug it back in to make sure it is seated. Sometimes it isn't seated all the way and that can cause problems.

Based on the overall behavior you described it sounds more like some kind of short in the wiring. Go ahead and test the wires running directly out of the brake controller. I expect you will have power here when you hit the override, and won't have the flickering when the vehicle is off. If that is correct, you need to work your way back while testing until you find the short.

I used my low voltage tester (one with an incandescent bulb with enough resistance to emulate the brake magnet) to test the output on the brake output at the 7pin connector. Output seems fine. I was able to verify the bulb light intensity changing with rotation of control knob.
