Replacement Axle for 1972 Sears Boat Trailer

Updated 12/22/2025 | Published 10/11/2024

Question:

Hello, I have a 1972 Sears boat trailer that I would like to replace the axel. It has a 54 long axel on it now with the old integrated 8 wheel and bearing, and there is some pitting on the axel bearing surfaces. The whole trailer with the boat weighs under 500lb. I am looking for a replacement that can have 13 tires that can go highway speeds and not having to pack the old bearing and chases. Can you point me in the right directions with a recommendation. Thanks in advance, J.P.

Hi J.P.; I'm sorry to say we do not carry any axles that match the 54" length you have now. The best I can offer is the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension # ASR1200S02. This has a universal design so it will fit any frame width. It will also upgrade your suspension. The rating is a bit higher at 1,200 lbs but it is the lowest we have.

This system is compatible with any hub that uses # L44649 inner and outer bearings. We don't have anything that is integrated or sealed but you could use the # AKIHUB-440-2-EZ-2K for a 4 on 4 bolt pattern or # AKIHUB-545-2-LFEZ-2K for a 5 on 4-1/2. If you're looking for new wheels and tires you can use the # AM31990 with a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. This tire has a speed rating of M for 81 mph. If you only need tires then the # AM10210 has the same speed rating and fits 13" x 4-1/2", 13" x 5" and 13" x 5-1/2" rims.

I realize the Timbren system may be more than you want to invest in a trailer from 1972 but it is the only option we have. If you want to stick with a standard axle I would reach out to a local trailer repair shop, or a company like Dexter, and see if a 54" axle rated for your trailer is something they can get for you.

Hey J.P., did you end up trying the Timbren axle-less suspension for your Sears boat trailer? I'm curious how it handled the lightweight setup and if the 13-inch wheels worked out for highway use. Your update could help others restoring older trailers like yours.
