Brake Light Relay & Cruise Control on 2020 F-150

Updated 10/21/2024 | Published 10/05/2024

Question:

I installed the Roadmaster brake light relay kit on my 2020 Ford F150. Right after the install, my cruise control won’t turn on anymore. Internet searches seem to indicate the brake light switch has something to do with cruise control. Was this caused by the relay kit, and what is the fix?

Hey Michael, I did some digging but haven't heard of the brake light relay # RM-88400 causing an issue with cruise control on the F-150, so I can't verify if the kit has anything to do with it. Nobody I had spoke with had either, so unfortunately I don't have any type of fix for this particular issue for you.

I figured out a fix for this, and wanted to tell you in the chance it might help someone else in the future. The cruise control apparently gets disabled when you take off the dash and unplug the wiring harnesses below the steering wheel. That’s required to access the brake switch and install the relay. Once it’s back together, the cruise control won’t work right away. I have an electric parking brake (no peddle, but a pull lever switch that activates it). You have to cycle the parking brake 2 or 3 times on and off and that gets everything working again. Can’t really explain it, but I found it on an obscure F150 blog, and it works. Thanks.
