Hitch and Bike Rack for 2013 Mazda 3 Carrying Lectric Cargo eBike

Updated 10/10/2024 | Published 09/27/2024

Question:

Hi, I'm trying to help my friend find a bike rack/2" hitch that will carry the new Lectric cargo e-bike he just purchased. I see his car 2013 Mazda 3 Hatchback has predrilled hitch holes that can be used, but I can't find a 2" hitch. Can you help? It appears the Hollywood Sports Rider e-bike hitch would carry his Cargo Bike, but it says not to use a 1 1/2 extention to 2" adapter. What do you recommend? Thanks! Pam

Hello Pam; bike racks for a Class III hitch aren't going to be an option for the Mazda 3. Because of the design of the vehicle and its capabilities a Class I hitch like the Curt # C11383 is the only choice. Even if you could use an adapter, the adapter reduces the hitch capacity by 50% so it wouldn't be able to hold the weight of the bike and the bike rack.

From what I found it looks like the Lectric Cargo E-bike weighs 68 lbs. The only bike rack that is rated for a Class I hitch with a high enough capacity is the Thule Epos # TH99XE which can hold 75 lbs for a single bike. For an option that doesn't carry such a high cost we have the RockyMounts HighNoon FC # RKY77RR. However, this maxes out at 60 lbs per bike so the battery would have to be removed to carry it.

Hi Robin, Your information was very helpful. I contacted my friend and placed the order today for his hitch and rack. The items will arrive Nov 13. Your sleuthing really helped narrow the choices and made the ordering much easier. Thanks for the second option bike rack that wasn't #1,000! Sincerely, Pam Allen
