Weight Distribution for a Rockwood Roo 233S with Dry Tongue Weight of 585 Pounds
Published 05/23/2014 >
Question:
This question is most applicable to my situation: Proper hitch for Rockwood Roo 233S I am purchasing the above trailer, with the following specs: Base/Dry Unit Weight 4372 lbs. Base Dry Hitch Weight 585 lbs. Base Dry Axle Weight 3787 lbs. Cargo Capacity 1833 lbs. What weight rating in a hitch should I look for? Thanks. I have the exact same truck and camper. But I am wondering which nicer Reese setup might be better? I dont want such a complex install process like on the cheaper PRO models. Thanks,

When choosing a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer when loaded and ready to tow and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.
Based on the information you have provided the trailer will weigh 6,205 pounds if loaded to capacity. This could make the tongue weight of just the trailer between 585 and 930 pounds (up to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight). So you will need to consider that when looking at systems.
Based on the probable tongue weight figures a system rated for 750 pounds tongue weight like # PS49582 would not be sufficient. You would want to go up to a system rated for 1,000 pounds max tongue weight, # PS49583.
The installation for the # PS49583 that you referenced would be pretty standard when compared to other installations. It would work very well for you and I also would recommend it for you.
For an upgraded unit that would work well but would be a little more difficult for the initial install I would recommend the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w Sway Control # RP66084. This system has the only sway control system that actively works to stop sway before it starts. This would be your best option.
