Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch For A Grand Design Transcend 151BH

Updated 09/18/2024 | Published 09/11/2024

Question:

Hello, I just got a new travel trailer and need help picking out a weight distribution hitch. It is a grand design 151BH It has an over of around 4500lbs and a stated tongue weight of around 500. I assume that will go up as I load it up. I want to get a curt with sway. Will the one that is rated for 8000 cover me? Is it too much or too little? Please help.

Hi Ben,

The tongue weight of the trailer will definitely change as weight is added to the trailer. Tongue weight is typically about 10-15% of your GVWR so with your Transcend having a GVWR of 4,420 that would be a range of 442 - 663lbs. You'll likely sit around 500-550lbs so going with an 8,000lb system would give you spring bars that are too stiff.

I recommend going with the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control # FA94-00-0600. Fastway makes some of the best quality, easy to use weight distribution hitches on the market. This specific model has 2-points of contact with the spring bars to the frame brackets for sway control. It doesn't come with a hitch ball so you would want part # A-90 for a 2" ball or # C40030 for a 2-5/16" hitch ball. I'm pretty sure your Transcend has a 2" coupler but you'll want to check to confirm.
