Can a 1-3/4" Leaf Spring be Replaced with a 2" Leaf Spring for a Road Repair

Updated 09/03/2024 | Published 08/27/2024

Question:

When I am on the road traveling, it seems like the standard slipper leaf spring replacement is 2 inch width. If I am traveling, can I replace the 7k or 8k 3500 or 4000 1 3/4 inch Roadmaster leaf spring with a 2 inch spring if I need to replace a broken slipper spring? From a previous response, it looks like the box is 2 3/4 inch wide.

Great question, Douglas!

You might be able to physically fit a 2" wide leaf spring in the center box of the Roadmaster Comfort Ride Leaf Spring Suspension Kit w/ Shock Absorbers # RM-2460-2570, but as a general rule of thumb you need to keep everything on both sides of your trailer suspension the same to get the most consistent wear and performance. This is so much so that when you swap out one leaf spring it's best practice to swap both of them out on the same axle.

Instead of replacing a broken leaf spring with whatever you're able to get your hands on, I recommend keeping a few of the Replacement 7K Leaf Spring # RM75EQ on hand so you're able to use the right leaf spring right away.

The only time using mismatched parts is somewhat acceptable is if you're in a pinch and you use it to hobble your way to a repair shop to get the right thing.

Thanks for the advice. I was going to go to Alaska, and was thinking of buying 2 extra leaf springs and storing them underneath.
