Recommended Ball Mount W/ 5" of Rise for a Volvo XC90

Updated 01/19/2026 | Published 08/11/2024

Question:

I have a question about the best trailer hitch for my situation. I have a Volvo XC90 [rated 5000/500 lb towing] that I use to tow my Wolf Pup travel trailer [3090 dry]. I experience some sway while towing. Volvo does not allow a weight distribution hitch, and the car has auto sway control built in. Do you have product recommendations to help with two things: 1. I need a 5 rise on the hitch. What would be the best situation for shock absorption? Would the Curt rockerball work well on my Curt adjustable hitch? 2. My second issue is that I would like to add a sway bar. Could I add the Reese Sway Control Bracket, along with the Curt rockerball, to my Curt adjustable hitch? Or is there another all-in-one solution that might work better? Thank you for your help!

Rebekah, so unfortunately the Curt RockerBall # C40047 won't physically fit on your Curt Rebellion XD # C83WR so the two can't be used together.

What you could do instead is, use the Curt Ball Mount for 2" Hitches # C45336 instead which will work with the Rockerball and has that 5" of rise you're looking for and then get the Replacement Sway Control Tab for Weight Distribution System # 3442 welded on so you can use a weight distribution system.

Hey Rebekah, how did things go with the Curt ball mount and RockerBall setup for your XC90 and Wolf Pup trailer? Did adding the welded sway control tab help reduce the sway you were seeing? Your update could make it easier for others towing with similar vehicles.
