Will Switching to Bigger Wheels On a Tow Dolly Limit the Amount of Blowouts

Updated 08/07/2024 | Published 08/03/2024

Question:

I have an EZE Tow car dolly that comes with 12 inch E-rated trailer tires. I have had three tire failures with these tires despite running at the max 80 PSI as stated on the tire. The dolly is carrying a 2018 KIA Sorento which I believe has a weight of around 4,000 pounds. Will going with a 15 inch wheel give me a more robust tire system to avoid failures?

If I'm looking at the right thing, then the reason you're having so many blow outs is because you're overloading the dolly. It looks like the tires you have right now are likely something like the Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10140 which has a max weight capacity of 1,520 lbs (x2 = 3,040), so you'd be overloading the dolly by around 2,000 lbs (according to Google).

Using a 15" wheel will definitely give you more capacity, around 600 more lbs, but still won't be enough.

The dolly only has to support the front end of the car. The back of the car rides on its own tires. According to the dolly manufacturer the maximum weight of the car on the dolly is 5,000 pounds so my car is well under that spec. They equip the dolly with the 12 inch E-rated tires knowing that only a portion of the 4,000 pounds of the car will actually be on the dolly tires.

@RandallP Okay I see, well in that case yes the 15" wheel will definitely give you more capacity, and will hopefully avoid future blowouts.
