What Is the Black Wire for on the Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness
Updated 07/31/2024 | Published 07/29/2024 >
Question:
I see that this piece includes a 12v line that goes to the battery, however the OEM unit doesnt have one. What is the purpose of that line and is it necessary? The OEM unit only plugs into the harness and has a grounding line. Not sure why Tekonsha has an extra 12v

Chris, I believe the extra 12v line you're looking at for the Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector # 118290 is the power for the ModuLite unit. This isn't standard OEM which is probably why your original didn't have one.

I connected it without the 12v line and seem to have all trailer items running. Turn signal, brakes, etc. The module is running fine so I think that 12v is only to power the 12v connection to the trailer. Not a major concern for me but it's still confusing as OEM pulls that power from the module without an additional line.
