Recommended Suspension Setup For A Lightweight Offroad Trailer

Updated 07/23/2024 | Published 07/22/2024

Question:

Building a offroad trailer that is lightweight. I need a 5x5 pattern for my wheels and electric brakes. I think a 3500lb axle is overkill as the trailer will be under 2000lb. So Is there a 7 brake hum with 5x5 or is there a way to put 10 hubs on the 2200lb axle? Trying to avoid a stiff ride on a light trailer offroad. Possible I could do a 3500lb axle with lighter springs?

Hey Kevin,

Since you're planning on taking the trailer off road I recommend not going with an axle and instead building the trailer with the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension # ASR1THDS02. This is rated for 2,200lbs but uses a 3,500lb spindle so you'd be able to use larger tires and put 10" hubs on. They have built-in Timbren jounce springs to handle the rough terrain and work independently for a less bouncy ride. Without an axle beam in the way you'll have better ground clearance a well.

For the brakes you can use the etrailer Electric Trailer Brakes # AKEBRK-35 or # AKEBRK-35-SA if you want self-adjusting brakes. For the hubs/drums the Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-550-35-EZ-K would be a great option and comes with the bearings pre-greased so you'll just need to lube up the spindle and slip the hubs on.

If you went with a standard leaf spring suspension/axle you would have to size up to 3,500lbs in order to get a compatible 5 on 5 bolt pattern hub.

The Tumbren is exactly whatbI had on the last trailer. It was nice but stiff, and the rubber inserts broke in a couple years and they wanted another $300 for the replacements. I never found myself needing the clearance. They were also a little more involved in setting up. I want to keep this trailer simple. I will do a 3500lb axle and probably do the 2000lb leafs.

@Kevin Ok, you'll need to determine the spacing for your hubs to sit and where the center of the frame beams will sit to determine where the spring seats will sit (see diagram above). We have a small selection of 3,500lb axles, which I've attached a link to below, that you can check the sizing out on or if you need a custom sizing you can reach out to our customer service department at 1-800-940-8924 to order one. You'll also need to determine the length of the leaf springs that you'll need. I've also attached a link to our selection of 2,000lb capacity leaf springs below.
