Question:

your wiring harness has a ground wire attached, the harness the dealer included has a five wire pin connector black: fused trailer brake controller battery feed green: headlamp switch to vehicle tail lamp green- yellow: vehicle stop lamp switch to brake controller input white-black: trailer ground yellow: trailer electric brake feed from brake controller output the SUV is a 2014 Lexus GX460, with dealer installed hitch and 7 way connector. if I use the 3040-P harness what do I do with the ground wire and where to attach it, why isnt it included in the harness so it connects like the factory one. also any help on location for the unit would be appreciated, there is a knee airbag located in the area, doesnt seem to have a great place to mount unit on the right side. thanks any help would be great

On your 2014 Lexus GX460 the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter # 3040-P that you referenced would simply plug into the connector you found. The brake controller only needs 4 of the circuits in your connector to function. The battery power supply, stoplight circuit, ground, and brake output to run to your factory 7-way.

The additional ground wire should be run to a metal surface near the connector. The Toyota ground is not sufficient for aftermarket brake controllers. There should be a nut nearby that would allow you to install the ring connector onto. Check out the picture I attached that shows this connection being made on a similar vehicle.

After looking at interior pics of your vehicle I would install it just above the air bag panel on the right side of the steering column.
