What Size Pilot Hole to Drill for 3/8 inch Diameter Screw

Question:
mounting stabilizer jacks on single axle trailer and 3/8 screws. What size pilot hole should I drill?

If the screws are fastened with nuts then a 3/8 inch size hole would work fine but if it's a self tapping screw I'd go with a pilot hole that's about 1/16 inch smaller in diameter.
