Identify Older Hayes Brake Magnet

Updated 07/08/2025 | Published 05/06/2014

Question:

Can you identify what brand magnet this pic is and where I would get a replacement if I need one? Not there is an ear extending out with a hoe in it. What type trailer/axle was this magnet used on? It has 12 drums

It looks like a Hayes Brake magnet part number 73400. We do not carry this part but I did a quick internet search and was able to find a couple places that sell them.

From the research I did it looks like this is an older style of brake magnet used in the 1980's.

@Fred I am not able to find anything at this time. It was years ago that I answered this question and parts must have been around still at that point but not currently.

I am currently looking for this brake magnet also.i am wondering if there is a left side and a right side for the magnets.also would like to see if there are cross reference numbers from Kelsey Hayes 79997 left and 79996 right and the Kelsey Hayes kit 56218. Trying to see if there is a cross reference with the Fayette Dayton W-2 8349 10.40” axle.are the magnets for this particular 1970’s model universal for left and right or must I have designated lefts and rights?

@MattM There wouldn't be a left and right hand side for the magnets. These are different from the Hayes magnets as well that you mentioned. Usually for stuff this old it's best to just swap to a modern axle with all modern components.

@JamesonC For our application it would. E too cost prohibitive to change out the hardware for our application.talking about $1000 plus dollars to do an upgrade plus removing a welded on backer plate for race axle x 4.the rest of the hardware is in good to excellent shape.with new brake shoes already ready to install. Some brake magnets are listed as lefts and rights.according to the numbers I previously mentioned.the 79997 being left side and the 79996 for the right side.I would think that if they were the same they wouldn’t be listed as left and right and with two different numbers. The Kelsey Hayes kit 56218 does not state a left or a right..These are discontinued parts from what i understand. But have found an oem stock that has dust on the box from storage.that I’m interested in getting but want to know if they are compatible. I do not have the resources of looking in an old catalog or a database that can cross reference the information. The Lafayette Dayton axle on the vintage wide world holiday rambler trailer 1978 has the left and and the right hand bolts instead of the studs and lug nuts.
