Should 2014 Ram 3500 Timbren Kit Have 1" Gap Between the Spring and Axle

Updated 05/31/2024 | Published 05/21/2024

Question:

TDR3500CA I have a 2014 ram 3500 4 x 4 and I tow a fifth wheel with a hitch weight of about 2000 pounds. The front has a leveling kit so the rear appears to sag a little. I would like the truck to appear more level when towing what would be the best gap to use with this part number. Would 1” be good? Mine measured 7.5 from mount to axle So without the spacer, it would be about 1 inch gap. Would the rear still seem to sag?

Hey Scott, thanks for reaching out!

The Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TDR3500CA will need a 1/2" to 1-1/2" gap for proper installation on your 2014 Ram 3500. The only Timbren kits that have no gap are ones that are installed on a motorhome.

What I recommend doing is installing the Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 Air Helper Springs # AL57295 kit instead because you get to choose how much support you get at any given time. To give you complete control I also recommend installing the Air Lift WirelessONE Compressor System # AL25980EZ so you can monitor and adjust the pressure in your air bags on the fly instead of having to go to an external compressor to get the air bags filled to where you want them.

Thanks Jon, one more question, when researching the Timbren product and the great reviews some said airbags have to be inflated to a certain extent at all times and more obviously when towing. My concern is that my 3500 rides like hell unloaded on rough roads anyway and having more resistance even a little may make it worse.

@ScottA Thanks for reaching back out! The air bags just need to have at least 5 psi in them at all times, and the only reason for that is to keep the mounting plates from folding over the rubber and pinching it - which can cause damage to them. Aside from that, I have heard that adding more than 5 psi can help unloaded ride quality but it's a case-by-case instance so you would just adjust them to whatever you felt gave you the best performance.
