Suspension Enhancement for 2006 Dodge Ram 3500

Updated 05/29/2025 | Published 05/25/2025

Question:

Im looking at the different Timbren options. We have a 2006 dodge ram 3500 that will be carrying a medium sized slide in camper. We want to minimize sway and sagging and maximize control. However, we will be driving from Texas to Alaska in it, then taking the camper out and will drive the truck unloaded. Timbrens says we need the severe duty for a slide in camper but I worry about the ride for such a long road trip. What would you recommend?

Hey Tiffany! The Timbren SES - Severe Service # T94VR is designed for a constant load like your truck bed camper. However, since you're worried about unloaded ride quality I would stay away from Timbren as a solution. Even if you get the standard # TDR3500CA you're going to have a poor unloaded ride quality. I would say this is especially true with the wide variety of roads you will encounter on your trip.

What I recommend is adding the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs # F2299. These have 5,000 lbs of load-leveling capacity and are fully adjustable. That means you can get things set perfectly for your camper and then run them at the minimum psi for zero impact on unloaded ride quality. I also recommend adding an air compressor like # F29VV so you can adjust the air bags no matter where you go.

If you want to stick with a no maintenance option check out the SumoSprings Rebel Custom Helper Springs # SSR-301-47-2. These have the same support as the air bags at 5,000 lbs with the main difference being the lack of adjustability. SumoSprings are far more forgiving compared to Timbren so you'll notice it unloaded but it won't be harsh like the Timbren SES would be.
