Do I Have to Run a Power Wire to the Battery When Installing a Wiring Harness on a 2018 VW Tiguan?
Updated 03/03/2024 | Published 03/02/2024 >
Question:
Instead of running the hot wire all the way to the front of the vehicle, could I simply wire it to a cigarette lighter adapter and just plug it in when in use? The adapter does have a 15A fuse built in as well. Or does the unit need to have power even when a trailer is not plugged in?

No, you don't want to do that! The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness item # C56403 needs a dedicated power source ran directly to the battery. We get these questions all the time and while it seems like a pain especially when there's alternative options like the one you suggested. We have to recommend you follow the instructions so you don't damage your vehicle, the SMT module on the wiring harness, and your trailer's lighting functions.
The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness item # C56403 has been confirmed to fit the 2018 VW Tiguan. It will not draw power from your VW's battery unless there is a trailer plugged if you are also worried about that.
I have attached an installation video below for you that shows a good spot to run the power wire if you decide to follow the instructions. Just a heads up you will void all of your warranty protections if you hook this wiring harness up to anything but the battery for power.
