Question:
Looking at changing out our poor bath exhaust fan for a Maxxair deluxe unit. Really dont want a remote, and ok with manually opening lid. I dont think its possible to pull new wire for Maxxair switches and would like to use the current on/off switch I have. I have read on your Q/A where you mentioned that Maxxair says that over time the higher voltage issue could lead to early failure of circuit boards. Is there some type of diode that could be installed to stop this spike? If on/off switch is used does fan automatically go back to low? When they say early failure..estimate 1yr.2yr.3yr.5yrs I would think Maxxair would have a solution other then a more expensive remote control as I would think this is fairly common issue. Thanks

I've installed more vents than I can count all to separate switches already built into the trailer or motorhome and not once had a single issue with voltage spikes. I have however ran into situations where the vent and another appliance were both ran to the same switch and had too high of a draw when both were being used at the same time, causing the circuit to overload. Running the vent with less than 12 volts is the more likely case for circuit board issues.
When MaxxAir vents are turned off and then turned back on they will typically start back out back at the lowest fan setting. Depending on the vent you have there are programmable settings where the vent could start out at a higher fan speed.
If you're wanting just a simple vent that you'd have to physically turn on each time then the MaxxFan Deluxe Roof Vent w/ 12V Fan # MA00-06401K would be the best option. If you'd like more speeds, as well as an auto mode so that the vent kicks on at specific temperatures then the # MA00-06200K is the better option for you. These vents will come with mounting hardware but you'll need to pick up some butyl tape # AL28FJ and two tube of self-leveling sealant # 34427034145-1 for a watertight seal.
