Troubleshooting Demco Autoslide 5th Wheel 18K Trailer Hitch Head Free Turning

Question:

i have a 18k autoslide model 6077 i was picking up my fifth wheel camper this morning from storage and the head went to the rear as if turning but i was going straight. I have removed the hitch because i dont trust it. Any thoughts as to why this would do this. presently i can turn head maually. thank you

It sounds like the gears inside the Demco Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # DM6077 may be off/damaged. I have attached a copy of the instructions which on page 10 show the parts breakdown for the gear mechanism. This will allow you to turn the hitch over and check to see if the gears are aligned. If not you can also see where the bearings and connections are to determine what parts are damaged causing the misalignment.
