Recommended Location for Breakaway Cable Installation
Updated 06/30/2022 | Published 06/05/2022 >
Question:
When I bought my first travel trailer, the dealer told me that the breakaway emergency brake cable should never be attached to truck hitch because if the entire hitch failed and fell off, the brake would never engage. Ok, I understand that albeit improbable. So, where do I place it? Or do I shrug and know the chances of my entire hitch failing is practically zero and attach to where my safety chains connect? Which system is recommended for a 7500GVWR tandem axle travel trailer?

It is perfectly acceptable to mount the breakaway cable to the safety chain loop on the hitch on your vehicle. This can be found in the instructions for a breakaway like your Hopkins Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit with Built-In Battery Charger - Top Load # 20400.
Another common location to attach the cable is a tow hook on the vehicle. Realistically any sturdy location you can attach it to on the bumper or frame will work for installation. If you choose to attach it to the safety chain loop it will not be a problem as long as your hitch is properly installed and you are not exceeding the towing capacity of your hitch or vehicle.
I have attached a helpful article and installation video for your reference.
