Solution for Rear End Sag When Towing with 2021 Ford F-150 Powerboost

Published 05/12/2022

Question:

Hello, I have a 2021 with the PowerBoost engine. I am looking to augment my suspension system with an airbag or other such device. Im well under my vehicles weight limitations by almost half, but I still get a little squat when I am hooked up to my camper. Can you recommend what you think is the best product for this purpose and also perhaps other options that I can consider? Thanks

Actually, I have a better solution than air bags. Air helper spring systems like the Air Lift # AL67PD work best for payload carried on the vehicle, not sag caused by a trailer's tongue weight. The # AL67PD would work for you, but it wouldn't be the best choice.

Using a weight distribution system will not only counteract the sag by using leverage to transfer a portion of the trailer's tongue weight to the truck's front axle, but if the proper system is used it can also provide resistance to trailer sway caused by oncoming or passing traffic which will make your towing experience much safer and less stressful.

In order to choose the correct system for your needs, you'll need to determine the camper's tongue weight when it's fully loaded as you'd typically tow it. You'll also want to include the weight of any gear stowed in the truck bed behind the rear axle as tongue weight. I'll link you to a help article that will help you figure that out.

I really like the weight distribution systems offered by Fastway. They're easy to use, easy to set up, reasonably priced and effective.

• For tongue weights (including gear behind axle) under 600 lbs, use # FA92-00-0600
• For tongue weights greater than 400 but less than 800 lbs, use # FA92-00-0800
• For tongue weights greater than 600 but less than 1000 lbs, use # FA92-00-1000

You'll notice that there's some overlap in the capacities of the systems. Each system has an effective range, and ideally you'd want the fully loaded tongue weight to fall as close as possible to the middle of the effective range of the system you use.

The hitch ball is sold separately. For a 2 inch ball, use # A-90 or # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch ball. To install the ball, you'll need a 1-7/8 inch thin walled socket. If you don't have or can't borrow one we offer them as part # EQ70-00-4800.
