Can Hydraulic Surge Brake Actuator be Locked Out for Electric Brake Conversion

Question:

Hello, Im trying to convert my trailer from hydraulic actuated to solid coupler. I will be replacing the hydraulic brakes with electric brakes as well. The tongue is 3.5inch wide. Im wondering if maybe this would fit inside? Do you have outside dimensions? I might just consider permanently locking out the hydraulic actuator and keep existing coupler but Im trying to think of best way to do that. I want to completely remove any movement in the tongue. I really dont like the jerky stop and go with a hydraulic actuated brake system. Thanks

The Demco Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # DM12717 and other tongues like it are meant to be mounted on the outside of the frame. None of our couplers will fit a 3-1/2" frame so it would be better (and more cost-effective) to just lock out your older hydraulic coupler.

We do have everything that you need to convert your trailer from hydraulic to electric brakes. I have attached a helpful article that shows everything you need. If you let me know what size axle(s) you have I can make some recommendations for you.

Another option you might consider is an electric-over-hydraulic (EOH) actuator. An EOH actuator combines the accuracy of an electric brake setup with the power of hydraulic brakes. If you were to install one I recommend the HydraStar # HS381-9065 for drum brakes or # HS381-9067 for disc brakes. Both of these kits come with a kit for adding a 7-Way connector to your trailer plus a breakaway system. Then you just need a compatible brake controller in your tow vehicle, like the Prodigy P3 # 90195 and you are good to go!
