Troubleshooting Curt Echo Brake Controller Not Allowing Ford Expedition to Show Trailer Connection

Question:
I understand that Ford uses load detection on the 7 way to provide 12V power probably sensing a lighting circuit however the Echo still pairs fine, solid blue light, and the trailer lights still work although I will say they are very dim. The vehicle does NOT see the trailer connected nor does the Echo. No tow/haul button on my vehicle but the vehicle senses the trailer fine without the Echo. We also tried the same trailer/Echo on a 2017 F150 and had the exact same problem. Without the Echo the F150 applies the trailer brakes just fine.

Expert Reply:
The new Ford trucks do have the smart tow package which makes the activation of the 7-way circuit sometimes challenging. We have an easy fix though with the part # 20142 which puts enough of a load on the circuits so that the truck thinks a trailer is connected and activates the 12 volt circuit.
