Is Offset Ranch Hitch 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter Needed For Short Bed Truck

Updated 12/17/2024 | Published 04/02/2022

Question:

I have a 2007 Chevy 2500 Duramax crew cab with a standard 6.5 foot bed will the Ranch adapter work or do I need the offset adapter?

The offset Ranch Hitch adapter is needed for trucks with a bed that is less than 8 feet long. You will need as much clearance as possible with a short bed truck, and without the 8" offset you'll be very limited in how much you can turn. So a short bed will need the offset adapter, which is the following part number:

- Ranch Hitch Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter w/ 8" Offset # AM3139

In order to make the installation of the # AM3139 much easier, it is recommended to use the Slide Hammer for Ranch Hitch 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter # AM3103.

The Slide Hammer allows you to seat the threaded collar properly over the king pin; it isn't required but if you don't use it you'll need a gear puller. You can see this on page three of the installation instructions that are linked below.

The length from the back bolts to the king pin is over 30". Will the Ranch Hitch Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter w/ 8" Offset cause any damage to the pin box? And if angle brackets are needed. Do you have a diagram of where they should go? I've got a Lippert 1621 pin box.

@JasonJ Hello Jason. I reached out to our friends at Anderson and the stated: If the pinbox is over 30" we do recommend a steel gusset be welded on for support. They also sent me a diagram showing how the gussets should be welded on. I am unable to attach the picture to this comment, I will email it to you.
