Question:
I have a 2022 Subaru Outback Wagon and I am interested in a hitch receiver. I want to install it myself, but I read somewhere that I will have to remove the bumper during installation, is that true?

That is not necessarily correct. We do have some hitch receivers that will require the removal of the bumper/fascia, but we have other options that do not require that. If you fancy yourself as a "do-it yourself" person, my hitch receiver recommendation would be the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2", part # DT73RR. This hitch receiver has a maximum tongue weight of 675 lbs and a maximum gross trailer weight of 4,500 lbs, but most importantly, it is rated a 5 out of 10 for ease of installation. You also will not have to remove your bumper/fascia for installation.
Now if you would prefer an option that has more of the hitch hidden out of sight, I recommend the etrailer # e25TR. The specs are slightly different. The maximum tongue weight is 350 lbs and the maximum gross trailer weight is 3,500 lbs. You will have to remove the bumper/fascia during this installation, but when you are finished you will not be able to see the crossbeam of this hitch receiver. It will be hidden behind the bumper.
I have included product description links and video installation links of each hitch receiver being installed on a 2022 Subaru Outback Wagon below.
