How to Add Power for Lights on Enclosed Trailer When Not Connected to Tow Vehicle

Updated 12/20/2021 | Published 12/19/2021

Question:

I have an enclosed trailer with a battery inside for the trailer brakes. I would like to install a second battery to power the inside and cargo loading LED lights when the tow vehicle is not running or disconnected. Please advise on the parts needed and the recommended battery. Thanks so much.

The battery you already have for your trailer brakes is more than likely a breakaway battery. The brakes on your trailer are going to get power from your vehicle through your 7-way connection. In order to power your trailer lights when the tow vehicle is not connected you will need a 12V battery like the # BRW34FR.

From there I recommend running a charge line from your vehicle using # 12-1-1. It would also be a good idea to install a switch like the # PK34308 so you can control the power to the lights from the additional battery without having to disconnect them.

Since the charge line would only maintain the charge and not actually charge the battery if it is run down, you will also want a charger like the # CTEK56353.

I have attached some review videos for your reference.
