Can 5th Wheel Hitch in 2022 GMC Sierra 3500 Be Installed to Rear of Rear Truck Axle

Can the hitch be mounted a little behind the axle , a tad closer toward the tailgate not mounted over the axle? I heard for the 2022 gmc with the Tri fold tailgate this is how it can be mounted .

The OEM trailering Puck package in the bed of your 2022 GMC Sierra 3500 would dictate where the # BWRVK3715 B&W Companion 5th wheel hitch would install.
A fifth wheel hitch would install either in front or atop the rear truck axle, not behind it. If the hitch is placed so that the pin weight of the 5th wheel is applied to the truck to the rear of the axle, it would apply leverage to the truck frame which would raise the front end of the truck to a degree. This reduces the amount of downward force applied to the front truck axle, which can reduce steering and braking performance. This is undesirable as well as unsafe, and should be avoided.
If you have a short bed truck, and you're wanting the hitch to sit more to the rear in order to provide more clearance between the rear of the truck cab and the front of the 5th wheel, you'll want to use the sliding version of the Companion, part # BWRVK3775.
