On your 2021 BMW X5 there is not a factory trailer brake controller port, so you will need to hardwire the controller of your choice.
If you have not already decided on a controller I recommend going with the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR due to it being the most low-profile controller on the market so it will blend in very well in the interior of your X5 and only require drilling one small hole that will be filled by the control knob.
To wire the controller you will need to use # 5506 to get the wire, connectors, and circuit breakers needed.
The black controller harness wire will get connected to the black wire of the # 5506 and run to the positive terminal of your battery with the included 30 amp circuit breaker.
The white controller harness wire will get grounded to your vehicle.
The blue controller harness wire will get run to the brake output wire on your 7-way connector
For the red controller harness wire you will need to install the a Stoplight Switch # RM-751000 and make the connection to that switch.
If you have not already installed a 7-way connector, or a trailer hitch receiver I recommend going with the Stealth Hitches Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver w/ Towing Kit # SH25VR which was designed specifically for your vehicle and includes the hitch, and the 7-way connector you need to utilize a trailer brake controller.
I included a few videos of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
