Replacement Hydraulic Brake Actuator For Trailrite Boat Trailer With Drum Brakes

Published 07/22/2021

Question:

I have a Trailrite boat trailer for a Catalina 22. Total weight of trailer is estimated somewhere between 3000lbs - 4000lbs. I think that the current actuator is most likely a Titan Model 6 actuator, which is welded on a 2inch tongue extension. The trailer has drum brakes. This actuator is getting old and I would like to remove and replace it with a bolt on model. This trailer will be used primarily in salt water. I am towing with a 2002 Nissan Xterra, if that matters. Can you give me a recommendation on the best actuators to use for this trailer? If I use an actuator for a 3inch tongue, can I simply use steel spacers to take up the extra width? Do you have a product for this purpose on you website? Also, do you know what the 90 deg attachment with the ball hitch that is welded onto the tongue is for? I would like to remove it if I dont need it.

For your Trailrite Boat Trailer I recommend the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM72VR. This actuator is zinc coated to resist corrosion and uses a 2" ball coupler with EZ-Latch mechanism for easier hook ups. It will mount similar to your old coupler in the height of the ball matches your current coupler so there will be no need to change your ball mount to level the boat trailer.

Currently the only bolt on actuators we have are for a 3" straight tongue. You would need to find some spacers to make up for the difference or since your trailer as a receiver coupler you might replace the current channel entirely for a piece of 3"x3" steel. This would most likely prove the best way since the current channel is only 2"x2". A local welding shop should be able to fabricate this for you.

The extra ball mounted to the attachment was for a Sway Bar # 17200. These are more commonly used on larger travel trailers as the wind causes them to sway more.
