How To Reduce Wind Noise On Roof Rack When Thule Hullavator Is Installed

Updated 09/21/2024 | Published 06/01/2021

Question:

My Hullavator whistles like a piccolo at 50-65 mph. I fixed it by putting Gorilla Tape, double width, over the crack beneath the roof rack crossbar and the base of the Hullavator. But then, I have to take the tape off when I take my kayak down. I took it back to the dealer who sold it to me and they didnt know what to do except said maybe a slice of pool noodle would do the trick. Does anyone else have a fix that wont fly off on the highway?

The best solution to help quiet down the air gap between the crossbar and Thule Hullavator # TH898 would be to add a fairing to deflect the wind. I recommend going with the AirScreen XT for Thule Crossbars - 32" # TH62WV. This is a universal wind fairing which will simply strap around your crossbars.

This may not take care of all the wind noise, but would certainly help. I attached a short demonstration video for you.

We solved the noise problem with the hullavator by flippibg the hull over, so the bottom of the canoe is up. My hubby and I didn't like the airborne noise.
