I was not able to find any ballard winches, but perhaps you mean Badland winch? I looked at the owner's manual for the Badland 9000lb truck/suv winch and they recommend a battery with a minimum of 650 cold cranking amps (CCA).

If you are hooking the winch up to a battery that is not on your vehicle and you plan to use it frequently, then I recommend going with a deep cycle / marine grade battery that has at least 650 CCA. This will hold up better since it is made to be drained and recharged many times. For example, my utility trailer has a deep cycle marine battery to power the trailer's winch and it lasts a very long time on a single charge.

I have the Badlands 9,000 lb winch I'm going to use for recovery. Also. People recommend 650 CCA deep cycle battery. Is there any more specs I need to know? How long will something like that last like one pool, etc any more information is appreciated. Thank you in advance

What kind of amp hour rating should I be looking for and how much weight are you pulling with your winch on your utility trailer and how long does it last? I'm looking to pull up a vehicle every now and then. Maybe a small tractor or full size truck if ever needed to be. Possibly a diesel

@Mark Hey Mark, I checked the owner's manual for the 9000 lb models from Badlands, and they also say there to use a 650CCA 12V DC Battery. There are a lot of variables, but you'll likely get more than one "pull" out of a single charge. If I had to guess, you'd be able to pull a few vehicles on a trailer before needing to charge it, but it also helps to do several second runs, then let the motor and battery rest for a few seconds, and go again. I used mine 3,500lb winch with a similar size battery (can't remember exact CCA) and for the longest time I relied on plugging in a charger every few weeks to top it off, but it never stopped working in the meantime. I usually pull golfcarts and offroad vehicles, so nothing too heavy. I'd recommend doing what I ended up doing, which is to tap into your truck's 7 way (if you have one) and allow the auxiliary 12v circuit to trickle charge the battery while you drive. I did this, and haven't had to worry about any other form of charging in a couple years.
