Installing Used Kelsey Energize Brake Controller in 2010 Chevrolet Silverado with Factory Harness

Updated 03/25/2013 | Published 03/21/2013

Question:

I have a 2010 Chevy Silverado Z71. I am wanting to install a used Kelsey Energize electric brake. Do you by any chance know where I might be able to find an owners operating manual? It has four wires White , Black, Blue and Red . My truck does already have the pre-wired harness you mentioned. There are five wires Dark Blue AUX, Red with Black Batt , Light Blue with white BRK SW, orange CHMSL, and a tan color which I am assuming is white GND ? I have searched for a manufactures website but have been unable to find it. I think there may be a certain way the device has to mounted level??. Not sure. I was also wondering how to adjust the braking.

Please take a look at the linked article, which specifically addresses the process of installing an aftermarket electric brake controller in a Chevrolet Silverado that is equipped with a pre-wired harness. The wires from the GM harness connect to the brake controller wires as follows:

Red/Black wire connects to Black wire (battery power)
White wire connects to White wire (ground)
LightBlue/White wire connects to Red wire (brake light signal)
Dark Blue wire connects to Blue wire (brake control output to trailer)

You may also need to connect two wires under the hood. One is the power supply wire to the aftermarket brake control and the other is the battery charge line to the 7-way connector. Both wires are Red/Black.
The brake control power wire is located between the fuse box and the fender; the battery charge wire is located under the master cylinder/brake booster assembly. (Please refer to the attached photo.) The battery charge wire and the power wire to the brake control have different size eyelets on them and will connect to the threaded studs under the Gray handle at the front of the fuse box. The two studs are also different sizes.

If your Silverado does not have a 7-way connector at the rear bumper, you can use part # HM40975. This includes the connector and bracket. Under your rear bumper (near the spare tire) you will find a cable that will plug into the back of this connector to complete your tow wiring.

I was not able to find any information regarding your Kelsey brake controller, but the proportional type units we offer, such as the Prodigy P2, part # 90885, do need to mount level horizontally, along the direction of travel. I have linked an installation video for this brake controller in a vehicle similar to yours and this too may be helpful to your installation effort with the Kelsey controller. Both proportional and time-delay type brake controllers have an adjustable output level (often controlled with a thumb wheel) as well as a manual override to engage the trailer brakes manually.
